Hi all, this is a good question. The BNF is a great resource ‘if’ you know how to use it. It may sound obvious, but there is a section at the start of the BNF that guides you how to use it. Most will use it as a dictionary and there will be a lot of back and forth. When using other resources just check to see that they are UK based as information will vary in other countries. If you want a quick snap shot of how the drug works then I would personally recommend the BMA drug guide. This is aimed at the lay person and a great medical jargon free intro. I recommended this to medical students who like yourselves found the BNF challenging. I am new to the OU so in the first instance please check the recommended reading list, in addition to it, consider this book, it is designed as a dictionary so easy to use. https://www.amazon.co.uk/BMA-New-Guide-Medicine-Drugs/dp/1405361794

    Hope this helps

Hi All. Hope you are keeping well. My name is Harpreet and I will be your tutor for this module. I apologise for not connecting with you all sooner, my mother fell ill and I had to take some unexpected leave. However I am back and very very excited to be here with you all on this journey. So a little about my professional background. I am a pharmacist by ‘trade’. I started work in community pharmacy and moved into hospital as soon as I qualified. I worked in various hospitals, set up and ran clinics. This led me to some industry consultancy work on medication safety and teaching tools. The ‘teaching’ is where I felt at home as I am a ‘nerd’ at heart and love all things pharmacology and prescribing. I have spent the last decade pursuing this aspect of my career as the prescribing lead (MBBS) preparing medics for the national prescribing exam and life as a prescriber. My clinical work has predominantly been in high risk medicines. The more complex the clinical case and drugs: the better! …and I am here to guide, enable and empower you on your journey to becoming a prescriber.
